Get into the spirit of Christmas with Christ Church Cathedral this year. We have seasonal events running from November 25 (St Cecilia’s Day all-day market) through January 6, 2024, the date which marks the end of the Christmas season.
The season of Advent opens with our traditional candlelight procession featuring top-quality choral music by our Cathedral Choirs. Guests will enter a darkened cathedral to hear again that ancient message of the world moving from darkness to light. Over the course of this 75-minute service, more and more candles are lit until the entire neo-gothic space is bathed in the soft glow of candlelight.
There are other opportunities to hear our choirs’ beautiful singing, our leadership’s inspiring speaking, and even to sing yourself. Our annual “Messiah from Scratch” (December 9) invites you, after a short rehearsal and an opportunity to grab a beer or glass of mulled wine, to participate in Handel’s “Messiah,” that Christmas classic. You’ll be accompanied by orchestra and led by the cathedral’s Director of Music, Donald Hunt. Our Service of Lessons and Carols (December 17) is another annual staple – a chance to hear and participate in some of your favourite Christmas carols, accompanied by the cathedral’s massive pipe organ.
The Reverend Canon Jeannine Friesen, the cathedral’s Priest in Charge said: “Christmas is a time for all people to come together, for relationships to be strengthened, for new bonds to be made, and for joy to be shared. It is my hope that people up and down this island will find joy in our Christmas programming, and that Christ Church Cathedral will be a gathering place for your festive celebrations.”
