Congratulations to Gabriel, one of our graduating Head Choristers, who took home the award for An Outstanding Performance in Junior Classical Voice at this year’s Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival!
The adjudicator, former UVic voice professor Susan Young, praised his reliable pitch as well as his ambition in tackling difficult repertoire (“Liebhaber in allen Gestalten” by Schubert and “The Water is Wide”).
Voice teacher Anna van der Hooft said: “It has been my great privilege to work with Gabe this year. It was his first year singing as a baritone with his changed voice and his work ethic was very impressive. He entered the GVPAF as a soloist for the first time ever this year and won an award for his beautiful performance of ‘The Water is Wide.’ I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this talented young artist.”
Gabe has been singing as a chorister at the cathedral since fourth grade, and is thus a founding member of the newly formed treble line at Christ Church Cathedral. Next year he will attend the Challenge Program at Esquimalt Secondary School, where they are also known for one of the top high school music programs in Victoria.
You can hear Gabe and the rest of the Young Choristers sing today at Evensong at 5pm in the Cathedral (in person only). All are welcome.
